Success Story - Joan

Joan was referred to one of Next Door’s MAVEN advocates by Adult Protective Services (APS) in April. She was 61 years old and confined to a wheel chair with multiple health problems. She had been married for 37 years to her caregiver husband, who physically, emotionally, verbally and financially abused her.

After several months of home visits by the advocate, Joan decided she wanted to get a legal separation from her husband. In June, Next Door introduced Joan to a volunteer lawyer who helped Joan prepare for the legal separation and get a restraining order.

Joan moved into the Next Door Emergency Shelter in September and stayed for about six weeks. While she was at the shelter, Next Door helped her find a new place to live and set up the supportive services she would need. She and one of her daughters now live in a small apartment.

Joan has decided to get a divorce, which is in process. She is safe and getting the services she needs.
