Success Story - Gabrielle

Gabrielle was a participant in the Las Hermanitas class at MACSA’s Academia Calmecac. The program teaches young girls about domestic violence so they can recognize and deal with abusive relationships. The program also enables personal and leadership skills development.

After a Las Hermanitas class presentation on date rape by a YWCA counselor, Gabrielle approached the speaker to talk about a personal situation. On the spot, staff members found a private room for Gabrielle and the YWCA counselor to talk.

Because of the Las Hermanitas program and quick intervention and support of the staff, Gabrielle, weeks later, was still taking advantage of counseling and other services she needed to deal with her situation. The Las Hermanitas program gave her the opportunity, the courage and the skills she needed to break out of the cycle of abuse.
