Help Us Help DV Victims Who Can’t Break Their Leases

We are seeking information and stories in support of a bill that would
expand the documentation that tenants can use to break their leases
due to domestic violence. If you have experience with individuals who
have needed to break their leases due to domestic violence, sexual
assault, or stalking, please complete this brief survey: Feel free to forward the survey
to others who may have experience with this issue. Please complete the
survey by Feb. 24. or email stories directly to

Currently, survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and
stalking who want to break their leases without being penalized must
have certain documentation. This documentation is limited to either a
police report or restraining order. There is no requirement that
landlords keep this documentation confidential. We are gathering
information on the need to expand the permissible documentation so
that more survivors are able to terminate their leases and move to
safe homes. We are also seeking feedback on the need to keep this
documentation confidential.
